As climate change and shifting geo-politics become reality in the Indo-Pacific, an unlikely alliance sets sail aboard the experimental medical ship HELPR 1, hoping to establish a new way to prepare and respond to medical emergencies in the Pacific.
Synopsis
Barbara Daufanamae is part of a new wave of medical specialists in the Pacific. The daughter of a remote area nurse, Barbara is a 25-year-old from the Solomon Islands who trained with the World Health Organization Emergency Medical Teams program. Barbara is aboard HELPR 1, a converted reef ferry operating as an experimental mobile medical clinic in Vanuatu. HELPR 1 is the brainchild of Dr Ian Norton, an Irish-Australia doctor widely regarded as a world leader in disaster response and preparedness. Dr Norton’s philosophy is a simple one – all nations should be prepared with the skills and knowledge to lead the response to a disaster in their own country. Also aboard HELPR 1 is Dr Basil Leodoro, Vanuatu’s leading surgeon. Basil has lived for years with the old school way of doing business. When a disaster occurs international teams fly in, take over and then leave. As the new United States Administration withdraws from the WHO and freezes its international aid program, Basil Leodoro knows the time for innovation is now. The humanitarian imperative must trump politics.
